Why Your Skin is Still Dehydrated Even Though You Moisturise Every Day

Why Your Skin is Still Dehydrated Even Though You Moisturise Every Day

You're consistent. You never skip. You've spent real money on a good moisturiser. And yet - tight skin, dull complexion, fine lines that seem more prominent than they should be at your age. Sound familiar?

Here's the hard truth: moisturiser alone cannot fix dehydrated skin. And if you've been relying on it to do all the work, you've been missing a step.

What Dehydrated Skin Actually Is

Dehydration is a skin condition, not a skin type. That means anyone - oily, combination, dry - can have it. In fact, oily and dehydrated skin is one of the most common and most misunderstood combinations out there.

Dehydrated skin lacks water content in the skin cells. This is different from dry skin, which lacks oil. Signs of dehydrated skin:

  • Skin that feels tight after cleansing
  • Dullness even when you're taking care of yourself
  • Fine lines that look more obvious, especially under your eyes
  • Skin that feels rough or looks flat in photos
  • Makeup that doesn't sit right or clings to dry patches

So Why Isn't Your Moisturiser Fixing It?

Because moisturisers are designed to seal - not to hydrate from scratch. A moisturiser creates a barrier on top of your skin that slows down water loss. But if there's not enough water in your skin cells to begin with, your moisturiser is just sealing in the problem.

Think of it like trying to keep a glass full by putting a lid on it - if the glass is already half empty, the lid doesn't fill it up.

To actually fix dehydration, you need humectants - ingredients that actively pull water into your skin cells. The most effective ones are Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and Polyglutamic Acid (PGA), and they need to go on before your moisturiser, not instead of it.

The Other Reasons Your Skin Stays Dehydrated

Over-cleansing or using the wrong cleanser. Foaming cleansers with harsh sulphates strip your skin's natural oils, weakening the barrier and letting water escape faster.

Skipping SPF. UV damage degrades hyaluronic acid in the skin over time. SPF is a hydration strategy, not just a sun safety one.

Central heating and air conditioning. Both pull moisture from the air - and from your skin.

Not applying products to damp skin. Humectants work by attracting moisture. Apply to slightly damp skin for better results every time.

How to Actually Fix It

  1. Add a hydrating serum before your moisturiser. A serum with HA and PGA floods your skin with water-attracting ingredients before you seal it in.
  2. Apply to damp skin. Humectants do their best work with a little moisture to work with.
  3. Don't skip moisturiser. The serum hydrates; the moisturiser locks it in. You need both.
  4. Check your cleanser. Switch to a gentle, non-stripping formula if yours leaves your skin feeling tight.

What I Use

The reason I created the Skinergy Hydrate & Plump Serum was exactly this problem. It combines Hyaluronic Acid, Polyglutamic Acid and Multi-Peptides at €24 - clinically proven and dermatologically tested. Apply two to three drops to clean, damp skin morning and night, follow with your moisturiser, and give it a week.

Dehydrated skin isn't a life sentence. It's usually just a missing step.

Skincare, simplified.
